CUSCINO (pronounced Coo-shee-no) which is Latin for “pillow” or “cushion”, was founded in July 2020 by the newlywed husband and wife team, Marbel and James Davis. After losing her job as a result of nationwide layoffs during the Coronavirus Pandemic, she was determined to continue providing financial assistance to her household. With the support of her husband, he encouraged her to look at the positive side of the situation as an opportunity to take advantage of the time to start her own business and become her own boss.
Born and raised in Colombia, Marbel was introduced to sewing at a very early age. She fondly remembers how her grandmother would make all of her clothes when she was a child, and would allow her to dabble with the sewing machine at the age of 8. Her mother, who was also an avid seamstress, started teaching her the fundamentals of sewing at the age of 13. For a short period, she also assisted her uncle who owned an upholstery business. During her teen years, Marbel continued practicing her sewing skills by designing and making her own personal apparel.
Fast-forwarding 20 years to the present…. while home during the pandemic, she began sewing again. She started a few reupholstering projects and making several different matching home décor items. While redecorating their bedroom, she asked her husband to make her a simple bed bench. James, having an abundance of power tools, has always been naturally handy with carpentry. After designing and completing their first décor project together, it was a no-brainer that they were on to something! Thus, CUSCINO was birthed!
